Atomic design and design tokens

Presentation
2023

A writeup of a presentation I gave on how design tokens could benefit our workflow at Piggy. I had to dive into this topic first myself as it was new for me as well. The timing couldn’t be better as later that year Figma introduced variables, being their approach to Design tokens.

Creative imagination of blind people

Thesis
2021

For my thesis, I investigated creative imagination, particularly in blind individuals, aiming to develop a measurement tool for comparing their creative imaginative abilities with sighted individuals. Where traditionally studies focused on visual perception, this research expands to include other sensory modalities to measure creative imagination. Personally, I learned a lot about how new ideas come to live and how different sensory modalities play a role in it.

“Every invention, whether large or small, before being implemented, embodied in reality, was held together by the imagination alone. It was a structure erected in the mind through the agency of new combinations and relationships…”

Goal of the study

Can we develop a measurement instrument that can compare blind and sighted people on their creative imagination?

Theory

Who and What

Three groups:

  • [1] Visually impaired people – Tactile perception
  • [2] Sighted – Visual perception
  • [3] Sighted people but blindfolded – Tactile perception

How

Generate as much ideas as possible from graphic. Select most original idea and give a detailed description about how you would complete the graphic.
The creative mental representations were assessed on vividness, originality, and transformativeness.

An example of a creative mental representation

Score:
  • Vividness
  • Originality
  • Transformativeness

Conclusion

Is it possible to measure the creative imagination of blind and sighted people with the same measurement instrument and therefore enable the comparison of both groups?
